英語勉強の備忘録#1になります。
今回は、’Speak English With Vanessa’のチャンネルの、
’30 Days to English Fluency: The Truth’の動画を視聴し、勉強しました。
気になった文章をピックアップし、単語や慣用句などの意味を調べていきます。
まずは、ひとつめです。

ここで気になったのが、’a whole range of’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

英和辞典で調べてみると、’あらゆる種類の’と出てきましたが、
イメージがあまり湧かなかったので、英英辞典で調べてみると、
’a lot of things of a similar type’と出てきました。
これにより、’If you have ever googled this question, you have probably found a whole range of answers.’は、
’グーグルで調べると、とにかくあらゆる種類、かつ似たような答えがたくさん出てくるよ’と訳すことが出来ました。
個人的に、’どれが答えなのか分からないくらい出てくるよ’といったニュアンスも感じましたね。
intermediate plateau
続いての文章は、
Are you an intermediate English learner who has been stuck on an intermediate plateau? That means that you made a lot of progress at the begging, and then you feel like you’re not really making any progress. You were on an intermediate plateau and you can’t bump yourself up to that advanced fluent level.
ここで気になったのが、’intermediate plateau’です。
plateauの意味は下記のようになります。

intermediateは、’中級’のという意味になるので、
intermediate plateauは、’中級者が陥る停滞期’という意味になるようです。
実際に、グーグルで調べてみると、

といったタイトルの英文記事が出てきます。
自分は、初級者か中級者か分からない状態ですが、
確実に’plateau’にはいるな。と思っているので、少しずつボキャブラリーを増やしていこうと思います。
no matter how
続いての文章は、
No matter how you feel about learning ability, you can always grow your motivation and determination.
ここで気になったのが、’no matter how’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

たとえどんなに
’no matter how’という慣用句を知っていたものの、
’どんな意味だったっけ？’となってしまいがちなので、ここに残しておこうと思いました。
初めに知ったのは、’no matter how you look at it,’(どう見ても)です。
また’no matter how’が出てきたらメモしておこうと思います。
roller coaster
続いての文章は、
Leaning English is a roller coaster. As we know, some days you feel really great and some days you don’t.
ここで気になったのが、’roller coaster’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

さきほどの文章では、比喩表現として使われているようですね。
ジェットコースターは和製英語で、英語ではroller coaster…
個人的に、roller coasterという単語を聞いて、
SALUの’Tokyo Roller Coaster’という曲を思い出しました。
確かに、英語勉強は、ものすごく楽しい時もあれば、億劫になることもあり、
成長が実感できる時もあれば、そうでないこともあるなあと思いました。
ということで、今回の英語勉強の備忘録はここまで。
また別の動画で勉強し、記録していきたいと思います。
