英語勉強の備忘録#2になります。
今回は、’Speak English With Vanessa’のチャンネルの、
’Stop Wasting Your Time with English’の動画を視聴し、勉強しました。
気になった文章をピックアップし、単語や慣用句などの意味を調べていきます。
まずは、ひとつめです。
way+比較級
Today I want to talk to you about five common ways that English-learners waste their time learning English. It takes way longer than they want to actually achieve fluency.
ここで気になったのが、’way+比較級’です。
意味は下記のようになります。
way+比較級で、比較級の意味を強めるというのもよくあります。

そういえば、’way too muchという時も、強調を意味していたな’と思い調べてみると、
「way」は副詞として働く場合があり、tooまたは形容詞の比較級を強調して、「ものすごく、非常に」の意味があります。

なので、’way too much’の時と同じような使われ方をしているということになりますね。
in just a moment
続いての文章は、
I will tell you about that plan in just a moment.
ここで気になったのが、’in just a moment’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

ぱっと聞いたときに、意味が分からなかったのですが、
’そういえば、just a moment pleaseという表現があったな’と思い出しました。
on the edge of your seat
続いての文章は、
You’ll have to be on the edge of your seat waiting to find out.
ここで気になったのが、’on the edge of your seat’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

ハラハラ、ドキドキ
この慣用句は知らなかったものの、’シートの先端に座るということは、なにかに見入っている時や、次の展開を楽しみにしている時だな’と思ったので、イメージは合っていたようです。
なかなか面白い慣用句だなと思いました。
let it fly
続いての文章は、
After the test, did you remember what you studied? Absolutely not. You just completely let it fly out of your brain, and you didn’t retain that information.
ここで気になったのが、’let it fly’と’retain’です。
まず、’let it fly’の意味は下記のようになります。

(1) 〈弾丸・矢・石などを〉〔…に〕飛ばす, 射放つ 〔at〕
はじめて聞いたときは、まったく意味が想像できなかった熟語になります。
思い返してみると、ISH-ONEがDEV LARGEに宛てた曲のタイトルが、Let it flyだったことを思い出しました。
その曲では、曲中においてもLet it flyという言葉が使われているのですが、
これは、DEV LARGEが属するBUDDHA BRANDの’人間発電所’という曲に出てくるリリック、’Take 2 and 回そう Buddhaらに火を灯して夜空に翳そう Yo! そして天まで飛ばそう’の’天まで飛ばそう’に掛けた歌詞であることに、今気付きました。
letという単語があることで難しく感じますが、日常でも使えそうな熟語になりますね。
retain
続いて、’retain’の意味は下記のようになります。

〈物が〉〈…を〉保つ，抑える，あるべき場所に留める.
’保つ’といえば、maintainという単語を知っていたので、その違いについて調べてみると、
Quoraにて同じ質問がされており、ネイティブによる回答がありました。

To retain something is to keep it.
To maintain something is to take care of it.
To retain a car – keep it for yourself.
To maintain a car – change the oil. Replace the tires. Add fuel. Wash the car.

’keep it’と’take care of it’の違いということで、なるほどなと思いました。
なので、さきほどの文では、maintainという単語は使えないのかなと思います。
scientific studies
続いての文章は、
Scientific studies have proven that when you write something down, specifically on paper, but you can take notes on a device as well, this helps to connect those concepts to your brain so that you can remember them more easily. So I highly recommend taking notes.
ここで気になったのが、’scientific studies’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

英語勉強に関することが話されている中で、’study’という単語が使われていたので非常にややこしかったですね。

続いての文章は、
The act of writing it down helped it to not just go in one ear and out the other.
ここで気になったのが、’go in one ear and out the other’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

英英辞典で調べると、下記のようになります。

go in one ear and out the otherと聞いたときに、ムーディ勝山のネタである’右から来たものを左へ受け流すの歌’を思い出しました。
上記の慣用句は、’すぐ忘れてしまう’といったように、意図的ではないため、
ムーディ勝山のように、’意図的に、右から左に聞き流すのはなんて言うのだろう’と調べてみると、上記の慣用句を用いたまま、表現することができるようです。

「let」を使って、「let 〜 go in one ear and out the other」とすれば、「〜を一方の耳に入れもう一方の耳から出させる」、つまり、「〜を右から左に聞き流す」となります。

意図的に聞き流すような状況にはあまり陥りたくはないですが、
なにか色々言われてしまう時に、使えそうな表現だなと思いました。

Maybe you are trying to do something new, and you can’t take that first step before you know that you’re probably going to make a mistake. you can’t have a conversation in English because you’re so worried about making a mistake.
ここで気になったのが、’perfectionist’と’can’t handle’、’take that first step’です。
それぞれの意味は下記のようになります。

私は、perfectionistであるなと感じることがあるので、グサっときた文章ですね。
80％くらいを目安に取り組んでいきたいと思います。
roadblock
続いての文章は、
Being a perfectionist can be a huge roadblock for your English-learning.
ここで気になったのが、’roadblock’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

ここでは比喩表現として使われているようですね。
the faster ～, the better
続いての文章は、

ここで気になったのが、’the faster ～, the better’です。
意味は下記のようになります。
the 比較級, the 比較級「～すればするほどますます…」

英語勉強#1に記載した’no matter how’と同じように、
この文法自体は知っていたものの、意味を忘れてしまいがちなので、こちらも書き残しておこうと思いました。
また’the 比較級, the 比較級’という表現が出てきたら、メモしておこうと思います。

続いての文章は、

ここで気になったのが、’at your fingertips’です。
意味は下記のようになります。
at one’s fingertips

1.〔物が〕指先にある、すぐ手の届く所に、手元に、すぐに使える状態で
知ったときに、面白い表現だなと思いました。
それほど使う機会は多くはなさそうですが、日常でも使える慣用句かなと思います。
