今回も、’Speak English With Vanessa’のチャンネルの、
’200 Important English Expressions: English vocabulary lesson’の動画を視聴し、勉強しました。
気になった文章をピックアップし、単語や慣用句などの意味を調べていきます。
まずは、ひとつめです。

Well, that plan didn’t go like I expected, I guess it’s back to the drawing board.
ここで気になったのが、’back to the drawing board’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

Vanessaによる補足は、下記のようになります。
You don’t need to be an architect or an artist to use this expression. It’s just an idiom. So if you need to completely scrap your plans and start over, you can say I guess it’s back to the drawing board.
’drawing boardという言葉が出てくるが、慣用句なので、建築家や画家以外でも使えるよ’ということでした。

続いての文章は、
When you work on a group project, it is important to pull your own weight.
ここで気になったのが、’pull your own weight’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

・He’s not pulling [carrying] his (own) weight. : 彼は自分の役割［仕事・分担］を十分果たしていません。
・Although she is quiet, Stella pulls [carries] her (own) weight and does more than enough. : ステラは目立たないが、十分過ぎるほどの仕事をこなしている。
’なぜpullなんだろう’と思っていると、ボートをこぐときの様子が語源ということで、なるほどなと思いました。
例文を見てみると、’his (own) weight’、’her (own) weight’となっているので、ownはなくても問題ないようです。
人の好みによると思いますが、個人的にはownがあったほうが言いやすいなと感じました。

続いての文章は、
Let’s touch base next week after the project has already gotten started.
ここで気になったのが、’touch base’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

Vanessaによる補足と意味は、下記のようになります。
To touch base is kind of a baseball expression and it means let’s check in, let’s talk to each other and kind of see where we’re at.
野球用語と聞いて、’あ～!野球用語から来てるのか～’と思いつつ、’ベースにタッチすることがなぜ連絡を取るという慣用句になるんだ？’と疑問に思い、調べてみました。
’野球用語から来ている’というのは出てくるのですが、’なぜそのような意味になるのか’は出てこなかったので、英語で調べてみました。
Quoraで回答していたネイティブも、’詳しい語源は分からない’としつつも、
2人の回答が興味深かったので、見ていきたいと思います。
1人目の回答→
What is the origin of the expression “to touch base with someone”?
So for the sake of clarity, here’s a brief description:・A player can’t advance without “touching base.”
・You start at “Home Base,” and the object is to get back to “Home Base” safely, by running around the base paths.
・To do so you must touch “1st base,” “2nd base,” and “3rd base,” in order. You’re checking in with each “base” along the way. As long as you do so, you’re “safe.” This is the only way you can proceed.
・If you fail to reach base before the ball does, or before an opposing player with the ball touches (tags) you, you’re “out.”
・To be “out” means you can’t proceed, and you’ve cost your team an “out.” Since each team only gets 3 “outs” per inning, you’ve reduced the chances of your team achieving its objective.So the idiom can refer to:

What is the origin of the expression “to touch base with someone”?
Not sure of the origin but I’ll guess that the meaning and application are good enough.
I ‘touch base’ with you when I come to you and chat (or use email, IM, telephone, etc.) to establish a common understanding of material we are using jointly. Perhaps it is a schedule, or a way to present an idea, or a summary of problems and potential solutions – the main idea is that you and I discuss the matter at hand until we have a shared understanding and, one hopes, agree on steps to be taken next.
American rules baseball has ‘bases’ which much be touched in sequence when running as a ball is hit, finicky exceptions omitted, until one reaches home plate to score a run. Perhaps the expression began as an imaginative leap from standing on a midpoint in your process toward scoring, from standing at a virtual midpoint in a process to achieve a common understanding of which ‘base’ to take next.

Checking in with your proverbial “Home Base”という意味は分からなかったものの、
そのほかは、連絡する・安全なことを知らせる・プラン通りに進んでいることを知らせる、といった意味になります。
’野球の各塁をタッチしながら進み、その塁に居るということは、チームメイトに知らせるというイメージになる’という回答になるのかなと思いました。
続いて、2人目ですが、
最後の文の
Perhaps the expression began as an imaginative leap from standing on a midpoint in your process toward scoring, from standing at a virtual midpoint in a process to achieve a common understanding of which ‘base’ to take next.
が興味深いなと思いました。
文章が難しかったため、だいたいのニュアンスをイメージすると、
こちらの方は、’点を取る為には、塁に踏む必要がある。塁に進むには、それに向けての共通の理解や認識がないと達成できないよね’というような意味合いを感じました。
なので、’塁に進むために、連絡を取るといった意味から来ているのではないか’ということを言っているように思います。
1人目は、
塁に居る→安全なことを知らせる・プラン通りに進んでいることを知らせる
といったように、走者の目線から、
2人目は、
塁に進むには→連絡を取る必要がある
といったように、チーム全体の目線から、
’touch baseは、連絡を取るという意味になるのではないか’ということでした。
調べる前よりも、touch baseのイメージがしやすくなりましたね。
coffee run
続いての文章は、
Hey, I’m going on a coffee run, do you want anything?
ここで気になったのが、’coffee run’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

Coffee run は「コーヒーを調達するためのお使い」という意味の名詞句のスラングです。
この文章を聞いたときに、’もしかして、スターバックスとかに、みんなの分を一緒に買ってくることかな？’と思ったのですが、イメージした通りのスラングでした。
どうやらcoffee runの’run’は、’run an errand’から来ているそうです。
そのほか、coffee runについての詳しい解説などは、引用先のWrite a Diary in Englishの記事が分かりやすいです。

続いての文章は、
The grocery store, the bank, the post office… I need to run some errands this afternoon.
ここで気になったのが、’run some errands’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

使い走りをする
・I spent my first year just running errands for the president. : 最初の年は、社長の使い走りをして終わった。
さきほどのcoffee runの’run’の元となる熟語になりますね。
run errandsを知ることで、coffee runのイメージがしやすくなりました。
take a breather

続いての文章は、下記の2つになります。
It’s so hot. I think we should take a breather and go sit in the shade.
This hike is harder than I thought. I need to catch my breath before I go up the next hill.
ここで気になったのが、’take a breather’と’catch my breath’です。
それぞれの意味は下記のようになります。

どちらの意味も’一息つく’とのことです。
違いはあるのかなと調べてみると、

Vocabulary.comにおいては、意味は同じでしたが、
Longman Dictionaryでは、書かれている文章が違いました。
どちらも体を動かしている時、というのは共通していますが、
take a breatherでは、breathという単語はなく、restが出てきており、
catch your breathでは、breathという単語が書かれていました。
なので、take a breatherは休憩するというニュアンスが強く、
catch your breathは、息遣いを戻すというようなニュアンスが強いのかなと思いました。

続いての文章は、

ここで気になったのが、’tidy up’です。

’veg out’よりも、よりイメージがしやすいことが書かれていました。
’veg out’はより瞬間にフォーカスが当てられていて、’vegetate’は、’live’という単語が出てくるので、日常や生活にフォーカスが当てられているのかなと思いました。

続いての文章は、
Before I go to bed, I like to catch up on the book that I’m reading.
ここで気になったのが、’catch up on’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

英英辞典を見てみると、出来なかったことをやる→遅れを取り戻す、というイメージのようです。
下記のページが分かりやすく、溜まったドラマやアニメを見るときなどにも言えるそうです。

続いての文章は、

ここで気になったのが、’put one’s feet up’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

足をどこかに置いて・足を伸ばして、座るというイメージから、リラックスするという意味の慣用句のようです。

続いての文章は、
I’m so thankful for our vacation coming up. I really need some R&R.
ここで気になったのが、’R&R’です。
Vanessaによると、
R&Rは、’Rest / relax and recuperate’の略とのこと。
解説は、下記のようになります。
We often see this in writing ‘I’m going to get some R&R this weekend in the mountains. I’ll be back later.’ But you can also use this in conversation.
文章でよく使われるが、会話でも使うことが出来るとのことです。
recuperateの意味は、下記のようになります。

続いての文章は、

ここで気になったのが、’tiptoe’です。
意味は下記のようになります。

つま先を表す’tiptoe’が、動詞になると’静かにつま先で歩く’という意味になるのは、とても面白いなと思いました。
日本語では、’抜き足差し足’という言葉が、イメージとしてしっくりくる表現だなと思います。
